Italy: We made it (barely) to London May 29, 2007

Writing a quick note from London-Gatwick. After substantial excitement (including cutting several lines, sweet-talking various airline employees and letting Afsheen argue with gate managers), we’ve reached London. It’s been a rather exciting journey as of yet, but given I’m writing from a “pay per minute” internet access point, I can’t tell the story in its entirety.

Got time for one story (19 minutes and 8 seconds to go on the internet access):

After missing our connecting flight to London, we managed to get on the waitlist for a later flight to London. Although the list was 60 people long, we all managed to get assigned seats; unfortunately, seats distributed evenly throughout the plane. As the plane boarded, it become clear that although moderately full, there would still be several empty seats. The enterprising eye of Paco spotted a bulk-head row, with unlimited footroom. After many smiles and charming hand gestures, Paco claimed the row, allowing Colin and Afsheen to join him. Upon reaching his seat, Afsheen decided it important to cement his relationship with the flight attendant and proceeded to offer “hugs and kisses.” Note, Afsheen was also offering kisses to Paco, who had scored the seats, and Colin, who had simply sat next to him.

Eventually, the seating was rearranged so we could sit together in two “blocks,” one with legroom, the other one without.

Hope everyone is well! Miss you all!

My friends, I am an idiot! You know what I have just signed up for? A one hundred mile bike ride, the morning after prom! I have no idea why the hell I’m doing this, but hey, It’ll be fun! I get to go to prom, have fun, leave a little earlier then the others, and then wake up bright and early, and go to Santa Fe by 6:30 with my twenty year old road bike, and bike a hundred miles. I have got to be totally nuts!

Online Freedom of Speech April 29, 2007

I’m doing a project for my government class on internet freedom of speech, and ran across this article. Some of you may find it interesting:

http://blog.stanford.edu/unofficial/2007/04/court_upholds_online_freedom_o.html

In a decision with repercussions for the burgeoning number of Facebook-ing and MySpace-ing teens, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled this week that high school students’ free speech is protected by both the U.S. and Indiana State Constitution, even if the students’ words are expletive-ridden or against school policy.

This is, of course, not at all a guarantee that anything can be posted online. There have been other cases where this sort of thing was ruled as being libel. Also, in this case, the sudent’s comments (while obscene) were not exactly libelous. But still, it is interesting that such comments could be ruled as political expression and be protected under the first amendment, especially coming from a high-school student.

Marvin X to Nukes:

“I’m going to put this in terms I think you’ll understand. Winter Ball and Homecoming are like Tai Fighters; present, but kind of unimportant. Prom is like the death star.”

Perhaps that’s why so many adopt “black tie” attire for prom.

Misunderstanding April 16, 2007

Its interesting how different people are able to interpret words in so many different ways. Let us take, for example, a random phrase,  “Let’s go party”. Now this, depending on what the listener thinks of the individual, can be viewed in so many ways. If you think this guy goes and gets drunk, you think he means to go with a few kegs, and drink. If you think of him as a cuckolding young man, you think he will go and find some girls. If you think he’s an idiot, you think of walking around, dumb jokes, ect. However, what happens if this guy is none of these things and you have turned him down? You’ve just missed the most awesome party in world.

A Curse March 29, 2007

I, the entity known as Nukes, hereby curse a variety of adults. I do not curse adults in general, for to do so, would condemn innumerable worthy individuals who have much to share and teach. No, I condemn those adults who would take our childhood from us before we are ready, or need to leave it. I curse those who would wish to rush us into a world of harsh realities, a world of labor, a world of worries, a world without care freeness. I curse those who would have us work for them in the same manner, if not more then they would have from adults. We have so much to learn before we go into the world by ourselves, we just don’t have time to place the work they give us in the highest of priorities. I curse those who are taking control of the lives of my friends. I curse these people for what they have done, and will do to young men and old boys who are hardworking, thoughtful, intelligent, and meant for great things. I curse you who take advantage of their gentle hearts, I curse you who would lock these boys into cubicles, I curse you who would chain the imagination and creativity of our youth.
